Well I’ve got a trivia night lined up tonight at my old workplace. It should be a good night catching up with everyone and let’s see if our team can win again.
Where did the first cocktails originate from???? Well one source claim they started in San Francisco in 1862 with a drink called the Martinez which is what eventually evolved into the Martini.
The Martinez
4 parts sweet red vermouth
1 part gin
Stir and garnish with a cherry.
However another source states that the Sazerac cocktail was invented in the late 18th century in New Orleans.
The Sazerac
2oz straight rye whiskey
dashes of bitters
¼ oz pernod
1 sugar cube
Shake the ingredients together and serve in an old-fashioned glass.
The original version contained brandy, absinthe and bitters and historians claim that it was served in tiny French egg cups called coquetier which is where the name cocktail is derived.
However there is also written evidence that the Roman’s indulged in cocktails, so why knows when it began let’s just hope it doesn’t stop!
Here’s a recipe to kick the weekend off with:
The Foghorn
4 parts gin
Chilled ginger beer
Fill a chilled pilsner glass almost to the top with ginger beer and then pour in the gin, stir gently and garnish with a lemon slice.
Have a fun weekend!
